Review by Jerome Johnston (Cybersecurity Editor)

What do you do if you want to keep others from accessing your data? What do you do when you want to send a file over the internet safely and securely? I’ll tell you what you can do – you can encrypt and password protect your sensitive data so that no one has unauthorized access to it. A person with access to your computer cannot open and view the contents of an encrypted and password protected file; a malicious person who intercepts a file you sent over the internet cannot access it either, since it is encrypted and password protected.

There are a myriad of tools out there that you can use for encryption purposes. One of them is Silver Key. The software creates self-extracting encrypted files (called parcels) that can be accessed by users who do not have Silver Key installed on their machine. When the user provides the correct password, the encrypted file is decrypted. So, if you send an encrypted file to someone, that someone can simply type the password and have access to the data you sent; he doesn’t have to get Silver Key and install it on his system.

The program is very easy to install and completes this operation in no time. It supports most versions of Microsoft Windows, ranging from XP to Windows 7.

The functionality of the software is simple as it adds an option to the context menu of every file and folder, allowing the user to quickly encrypt it as a parcel file or as an executable that doesn't need Silver Key to be installed in order to decrypt files. After the user sets a password, an encrypted file will be created next to the original one, which contains all the original information. The encrypted file cannot be decrypted without the correct password, thus preventing the information from getting into the wrong hands.

Pros

It can quickly and easily encrypt any file or folder using the context menu. Besides that, it allows creating self-extracting executable files that can decrypt files even if the software is not installed.

Cons

The manual is very difficult to understand by beginners. Besides that, the program's options seem very complex. Silver Key is an awesome program for encrypting any file and folder with a password, keeping them away from unauthorized users.
